A SAMPLING OF RECENT EVENTS & FUNDRAISERS

Anne Frank’s diary gives readers an intimate look at private life in the Nazi period. But while
Anne Frank and her family hid in the “Secret Annex,” most Europeans experienced life under
Nazi rule rather differently. Why does Anne’s diary resonate with us so deeply?

SARASOTA SALUTES FAMED AUTHOR JOHN D. MacDonald in 2016

On July 23rd, the 2016 ONE BOOK ONE COMMUNITY program culminated with the 100th birthday celebration of acclaimed prolific author John D. MacDonald who lived and worked in Sarasota for over 34 years. The tribute to this beloved writer drew hundreds of patrons to Selby Library to enjoy refreshments and spectacular cakes (decorated with frosting covers of MacDonald’s books).

This special day at Selby Library was filled with presentations and a free film presentation of A Flash of Green. The grandchildren of John D. MacDonald traveled from New Zealand and Texas to join the celebration.

A magnificent inscribed plaque donated by Friends of Selby Public Library in tribute to John D. MacDonald was dedicated at Five Points Park across from the Library, and now is one of the highlight of Sarasota.

Much gratitude to these contributors for their time, support and contributions in making all of the events saluting John D. MacDonald possible:  Tableseide Restaurant Group, City of Sarasota, Sarasota County Library System, Library Foundation for Sarasota County, Cal & Nola Branche, Hyatt Regency Sarasota, Sarasota Herald Tribune, Friends of the Selby Public Library, and Kenney DeCamp, who helped organize and chair this very series of events.

Praise for John D. MacDonald

The great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller.”—Stephen King

“My favorite novelist of all time . . . All I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me. No price could be placed on the enormous pleasure that his books have given me. He captured the mood and the spirit of his times more accurately, more hauntingly, than any ‘literature’ writer—yet managed always to tell a thunderingly good, intensely suspenseful tale.”—Dean Koontz

“To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen.”—Kurt Vonnegut

Cocktails by the Book was definitely "One for the Books"

The fundraising gala "Cocktails by the Book" was presented by Friends of Selby Public Library on January 23rd. The Library pulsed with fun throughout the evening. Fete created the savory food and libations. There were few who left without raving about the music of Jennifer Leigh and her New Digs who made the dance floor rock with excitement. Lots of eclectic raffle items were won, donated by many generous local businesses and sponsors such as Jerry & Mary Bernas -- they donated a fabulous boat cruise outing on Sarasota Bay with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Every Board Member assisted in some way to create a stunning backdrop to a truly memorable event. Yellow roses, blue hydrangeas, delphiniums and swirls of royal blue organza accented the Library thanks to the expert touch of Rose LaChappelle. All proceeds will benefit free programming for adults and children at Selby Library.
